This painting is about navigating between traditional and contemporary worlds. I wanted to paint a journey of self-determination, empowerment, and navigating between different roles and expectations, blending masculine and feminine traits to do so. The combination of natural and structured elements balances the urbanity of ambition, wth the edenic landscapes of 'back home'. It features the Adrinkra symbol 'Dwennimmen', which represents the fine balance we all must strike between strength and humility.
LUDO GIRLS.
The "LUDO GIRLS." series draws inspiration from the classic game of Ludo, which we played often in my grandmother's house in Ghana. Ludo is largely game of luck, where the goal is to go around the board and return home; for me it is reminiscent of the diasporan experience. Each painting in the series represents one of the four corners of the Ludo board, with distinct colors symbolizing individual journeys and identities. When displayed together, their differences are very clear, but when viewed separately, what stands out is how much they have in common—a reflection of the shared threads within diasporan stories.
This series speaks to the interplay of luck, identity, and the desire to find home. It's as much about individual uniqueness as it is about collective experience.
