jungle blood
crying out onto the wilderness
like a manic drum
in some distant dream
This painting is about grounding, growth, and origins; knowing the value of where you come from and where you're going. I wanted to paint the notion of being rooted in something deeper than the surface, much like soil does for all life. The soil beneath us also connects humanity universally. Red is my favourite coloue, and to me, it evokes vitality, strength and blood, which is life. The painting features the Adrinkra symbol 'Pempamsie', which represents readiness and fearlessness.
LUDO GIRLS.
The "LUDO GIRLS." series draws inspiration from the classic game of Ludo, which we played often in my grandmother's house in Ghana. Ludo is largely game of luck, where the goal is to go around the board and return home; for me it is reminiscent of the diasporan experience. Each painting in the series represents one of the four corners of the Ludo board, with distinct colors symbolizing individual journeys and identities. When displayed together, their differences are very clear, but when viewed separately, what stands out is how much they have in common—a reflection of the shared threads within diasporan stories.
This series speaks to the interplay of luck, identity, and the desire to find home. It's as much about individual uniqueness as it is about collective experience.
